From the Stars, to Life

A reflection on the Qur'an, the cosmos, and the building blocks of life — drawn together by a single asteroid returning from the dark.

The discovery

In 2022, scientists studying pristine samples returned from Asteroid Ryugu announced the discovery of all five nucleobases used in DNA and RNA — alongside Vitamin B₃ and other organic compounds.

For the first time, humanity held direct evidence that many of the molecular ingredients associated with life can form naturally in space and survive for billions of years on ancient celestial bodies.

Did the ingredients for life arrive on Earth from the cosmos?

Asteroid Ryugu

Pristine samples returned from the surface of Ryugu contained all five nucleobases of DNA and RNA — alongside vitamin B₃ and a constellation of organic compounds. Formed in the dark, billions of years before Earth knew breath.

CHAPTER 01

The universe before the Earth

When the heavens were smoke.

Long before planets, oceans, or living organisms existed, the universe was a vast cosmic expanse of gas and matter. From these primordial beginnings emerged stars, galaxies, planets, and ultimately the elements that make up every living thing.

ثُمَّ ٱسْتَوَىٰٓ إِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ وَهِىَ دُخَانٌ

Then He turned to the heaven while it was smoke.
— Qur'an 41:11

وَإِن مِّن شَىْءٍ إِلَّا عِندَنَا خَزَآئِنُهُۥ وَمَا نُنَزِّلُهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِقَدَرٍۢ مَّعْلُومٍۢ

There is not a thing except that its treasures are with Us, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.
— Qur'an 15:21

The language evokes a universe where resources, matter, and provision are distributed with precision, purpose, and balance.

CHAPTER 02

Iron from the stars

Forged in dying suns, sent down to mankind.

Modern astronomy reveals that iron is forged within stars and dispersed throughout the cosmos before becoming part of planets like Earth.

Every structure we build, every machine we create, and even the iron in our blood traces its origins back to ancient stars.

وَأَنزَلْنَا ٱلْحَدِيدَ فِيهِ بَأْسٌۭ شَدِيدٌۭ وَمَنَـٰفِعُ لِلنَّاسِ

And We sent down iron, wherein is great strength and benefits for mankind.
— Qur'an 57:25

CHAPTER 03

Water · the foundation of life

From water, every living thing.

The Qur'an repeatedly emphasizes the importance of water — sent down from the sky, the substance from which life takes shape.

Today, water has been detected across the Solar System: in comets, asteroids, and distant moons. Wherever scientists search for life, they first search for water.

وَجَعَلْنَا مِنَ ٱلْمَآءِ كُلَّ شَىْءٍ حَىٍّ

And We made from water every living thing.
— Qur'an 21:30

A universe connected

Not a story of separation. A story of continuity.

  1. I

    Cosmic smoke

The heavens begin as primordial matter.

  2. II

    Sent in measure

    Resources distributed with precise order.

  3. III

    Iron descends

Forged in stars, given to mankind.

  4. IV

    Water arrives

The foundation of every living thing.

  5. V

    Life emerges

From those ingredients, the breath of being.

  6. VI

    Humanity rises

Formed from the materials of the Earth.

We are made of star stuff

We are not separate
from the cosmos.
We are one of its stories.

Long before modern astronomy, the Qur'an invited humanity to reflect on the heavens, the Earth, and the signs embedded within creation. Today, as we examine asteroids and distant worlds, that invitation feels more relevant than ever.
